Very boring stuff here. Very plain, very basic, very bare minimum stuff here (the point). Sit here and do nothing at all or stare at the ceiling maybe or listen to the birds maybe.
In all of the noise, our experience is optimized and commodified by objects and media that increasingly abandon real experience for some kind of distraction and our interactions with them become a sort of performance. Everything from objects to identities are hyper-optimized and aestheticized, packaged for consumption, and clamoring for attention.
When this is all we have around us, when it makes up our environment, we become totally alienated from real experience; from the mundane qualities of everyday life, and from pure duration. We live efficiently and we consume constantly. This is the nature of productivity, of passive activity, and of acceleration.
But it is in these very mundane activities of daily life that there are sites of potential; Practices of active passivity, like boredom, can actually reintegrate us with the real. Daydreaming, thinking, speculating, and observing, are diminishing arts.
There is an opportunity in design to create really real objects. Not as a solution, but as an interruption. If it is mediation that alienates, what is necessary are immediate and reintegrative objects
With that, my objective was to create an object that resists the demands of spectacle through immediacy as formal legibility and material expression while facilitating active passivity through use and interaction as a tactic for reintegration.
If the hyper-optimized object is an acceleration, then this object exists as a decelerant.
A couch facilitates tactics of boredom and lingering; neither sleep (bed, passive undergoing) nor task (chair, active doing) but active passivity (being).
Ideation had three main focuses: simple and legible; system or standard, self-determination; criteria as author, and material vs. ideal; demands of the real. Here, form is discovered through adherence to both conceptual criteria and material demands.
