This floor lamp acts both as ambient and task lighting, based on user adjustment. The aim is to simplify this interaction into simple and intuitive motions without any complicated mechanism or fabrication. The shade may be simply pushed, turned, or dragged, into the desired height and orientation.

Inspired by the industrial environment, the main structural component is a standard strut channel, allowing for movement of the lamp along the vertical axis.  Changes to the height of the shade results in variation in brightness. Its connection using simple nuts and bolts allows for the lamp to turn to either side, assuming a directional task function. The entire object is lightweight, and easily lifted with only a single hand. This emphasises the objects ability to be moved to support various use cases, and furthers opportunity for interaction where the material is not only seen but felt.

All materials are left bearing the marks of their fabrication and transportation. This is a kind of “ornament” that is not applied but is left. The industrial environment, usually concealed or out of reach, is available for intimate observation. Of course, all elements are necessary for function and nothing is decorative.

In consideration for lifecycle, the lamp is easily accessible and replaced, and in its removal, the entire object may be recycled, with minimal disassembly (two screws hold the lamp socket in place within the shade), due to its single material construction.
