This system was developed for The New School at the request of the university's merchandise store. The brief was to develop a means of display that can be easily transported and deployed in a variety of locations for events like graduation and orientation. This was developed by a team of 18 product designers in which small teams each developed their own idea from which a direction was chosen based on client feedback. Our team’s idea was chosen to move forward in development for its focus on lightweight and standardized materials. It is made entirely of off-the-shelf components, meaning future maintenance by the client can be done independently. We worked within strict dimensional constraints to achieve portability within specific spaces on campus. Its modular nature allows for display of a wide range of different product types and for deployment in a wide range of locations. Ease of deployment was an additional priority, and the system is designed to minimize actions in this process of deployment. The process is tool-free, and made up of intuitive and simple motions, such as unfolding or lifting.
Modules include a Point of Sale, a shelf + rack frame, a mesh + rack frame, a table, a mirror, and two boxes. These boxes function both as storage and as additional stability for frame deployments. The Point of sale is easily identifiable by shoppers in its kiosk form, and also functions as a cart for transport, in which all modules are stacked and strapped to it so that the entire system can be seamlessly moved together as one.
Sustainability was also in mind during development, in which all offcuts were minimized and forms were created to work with both the standard size offerings of components as well as the clients constraints. Materials were ultimately chosen based on strength to weight ratios and client budget. The project was completed over three months. Additional deliverables included technical and construction drawings and instructions as well as deployment and transport instructions.
